Today marks Nintendo’s return to the Cloud Gaming trend with the arrival of Control Ultimate Edition (which is available now through the eShop) and Hitman 3 on Nintendo Switch. Both titles were announced at today’s Nintendo Direct Mini: Partner Showcase which offered a glimpse at upcoming titles from Nintendo’s 3rd party partners such as Square Enix and Koei Tecmo.
For many years, the only way to play cloud games on Nintendo Switch was through their Japanese only launch of Resident Evil 7 and the one-off release of Assassin’s Creed Odyssey: Cloud Version on Switch. However, adding a highly anticipated new release such as Hitman 3 and an acclaimed title such as Control shows that Nintendo may be more to Nintendo’s sudden interest in cloud gaming.
With the Switch quickly falling behind from a hardware standpoint, the timing of Nintendo’s jump into cloud gaming is right on the cusp of Sony and Microsoft launching the next gen with PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and Google developing its own niche with Stadia. This leads to the thought process that perhaps Nintendo will invest in even more cloud titles to keep itself competitive in the next gen which isn’t a bad idea since Microsoft and Sony are making huge investments in that space too such as the recently launched Project xCloud from Microsoft.
